Obesity Q & A

What is obesity?

Obesity is a condition where you have an excess of body fat that can sometimes be associated with conditions such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes and fatty liver that can cause serious harm to your health. In the United States, over a third of children and two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese.

Doctors often assess obesity using a body mass index (BMI) calculation based on weight and height. While it’s not the most precise way of measuring obesity, it does give a reasonable indication of how overweight you are.

For children and adolescents who are constantly growing, Dr. Satnick will check the BMI growth percentile and also consider the overall trends for weight and height.

How does obesity affect health?

Obesity is one of the primary threats to health and is associated with conditions such as:

High blood pressure (hypertension)
High cholesterol
Type 2 diabetes
Coronary heart disease
Stroke
Gallbladder disease
Osteoarthritis
Sleep apnea
Chronic inflammation
Depression and anxiety
Chronic pain

Obesity also increases your risk of developing colon, kidney, gallbladder, endometrial, breast, and liver cancers.

It used to be that these chronic diseases were only seen in adults, but more and more kids are now becominning diagnosed at younger ages.

At Holbrook Health, Dr. Satnick addresses obesity in children and young adults before chronic health conditions can take hold. That way, they can lead a healthy life and maintain their wellness as they age.

How is obesity treated?

The safest way to tackle obesity is to commit to nutritious eating and regular exercise under medical supervision. For kids who are growing, calorie counting is often not the best option. Rather Dr. Satnick will focus on the health benefits of foods that kids will enjoy.

Dr. Satnick specializes in diet and nutrition and is an expert in childhood obesity, so she can provide you with the advice and information you need to lose weight successfully. She also monitors your health and underlying conditions like hypothyroidism (lack of thyroid hormone) or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that could be making it hard to lose weight.

Would I need diet pills to help with obesity?

Dr. Satnick does not prescribe diet pills but rather she will prescribe a lifestyle that fits the needs of your child and family. If your child has an underlying medical condition for which medications are recommended this will also be addressed.

If you’re struggling with obesity, you can find compassionate support and expert help at Holbrook Health. Call today or book an appointment online.
